Assessing the importance of the informal sector
to the nation’s economy, The Indian Institute of
Entrepreneurship, Guwahati is conducting a study on the
informal sector in Guwahati and its surrounding areas so as to
get a clear picture about the actual contribution of the
informal sector to the region’s economy. The major objectives
of the study are as follows:

Review the present status of the informal
sector in the state’s economy.

Analyse the contribution of the informal
sector in the economy of the region in terms of employment
generation, contribution to NSDP and total savings.

Identify the nature and type of enterprises
engaged in the informal sector along with the spread and
size of the enterprises and the magnitude of employment
generated.

Identify the constraints faced by the
entrepreneurs engaged in the informal sector.

Suggest measures to extend the scope of the
informal sector and also to improve the present status in
terms of productivity and efficiency by identifying the
particular needs in this sector in terms of training and
other institutional links necessary for setting up the
informal sector units.
